Providing advice on freight mobility issues

The 13-member Freight Working Group (FWG) met 23 times from 2007 to 2011 to provide first-hand knowledge of freight mobility issues within the project area. Members included representatives from freight-related businesses, business associations and ports of Portland and Vancouver. The group:   

• Provided insight, observation, and recommendation about the needs for truck access and mobility.
• Characterized the horizontal and vertical clearances, acceleration/deceleration, and stopping performance needs of trucks.
• Provided meaningful comments on the effect of geometric, regulatory, and capacity changes on truck movements.
• Provided information about the effects of congestion on freight-related businesses and the businesses they serve.

FWG endorsed project designs

• In May 2007, the FWG provided guidance to the preparation of the Truck Freight Existing Conditions Technical Memorandum documenting existing truck operation conditions and mobility issues within the Bridge Influence Area (BIA)
• In early 2009, FWG expressed their support for a replacement bridge with 12 lanes across the Columbia River
• Also in 2009, FWG endorsed the Draft Recommendation of Design Refinements.
